HOODIA GORDONI

The news of Hoodia, has graced the major talk shows. It has hit Hollywood mouths. But it's identity has humble roots. Hoodia gordonii is a succulent plant from a family of Asclepiadacea. It has been used by natives of South Africa for thousand of years, to control hunger and thirst during long hunting expeditions in the Kalahari desert. Listening to these hunters, known as the San Bushmen, they found Hoodia to be valuable in times of food scarcity in order to take away hunger and thirst. Another good principle of Hooida is increased stamina during very arduous hunting trips.

But can modern science take this Hoodia and use it for overweight people or even athletic performance? As far back as 1937, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), of South Africa reported that Hoodia appeared to suppress the appetite. In the 1960's scientists use laboratory animals to confirm their first findings. These animals voluntary reduced food intake and weight loss was the result. All animal remained healthy and had vigor. Interesting they thought.

The San Bushmen claimed the very same findings for thousands of years.

HOODIA AND SATIETY

The hypothalamus is the part of the brain that responds to blood sugar signals. These chemical messengers, relay a message of either hunger or satiety. This important role of the hypothalamus has been well documented when brain injury occurs. For example, if there is a brain injury to this part of the brain, major differences have surfaced. Damage to one part of the brain can cause overeating, damage to another area under-eating. Simple enough to understand. Which brings us to the thought of obesity. Although we must include all health factors such as: "sugar addiction", stress, medications, alcohol abuse etc. in accessing this unhealthy condition. But could a substance such as Hoodia, send the chemical messenger of satiety? Many people are convinced that Hoodia does exactly that! Especially in Western Europe, where it is the best selling supplement.

HOODIA AND SCIENCE

Researchers have found that Hoodia contains, steroidal glycosides. Glycosides are the sodium and potassium membrane keepers (pumping mechanism). Much recognition of glycosides are concerted in the heart, but these appear different. Doctor Stephen Holt, M. D. cites in his book. "Supreme Properties of Hoodia Gordoni, ( p. 69), these glycosides does not effect the heart in any demonstrable degree. More research is needed. A lot animal studies are listed in Doctor's Holt book. And no toxic side effects have been seen either in animal studies or human long term use. Doctor Holt suggests 50 to 400 mg of Hoodia (depending on body mass, of course), one hour before meal times.  Remember there are no miracle pills or magic bullets in permanent weight lost. It's the entire picture, of personal reasonability, healthy lifestyle. Hoodia can be used as a help-mate to support your goal of a healthy body composition.
